Train Strikes Truck In Hartman; Father/Son Injured

Two Hartman residents were injured at approximately 11:00 a.m. today when their truck was struck by a Union Pacific train on Main Street in Hartman.

The driver, Brian Harris, age 33 and his father, Vernon Harris, Jr., age 60 were northbound on Main Street, pulling a small flat-bottom boat.

When they approached the crossing, Harris pulled onto the tracks, then noticed the eastbound train.  He attempted to back the vehicle up but the train struck the drivers side fender, knocking the boat off the tralier and flipping the truck over on its side approximately 15' off of the roadway.

Both occupants were transported to Johnson Regional Medical Center in Clarksville with non life-threatening injuries.

A Union Pacific work crew was standing next to the raliroad tracks waiting for the train to pass when the accident happened.

Harris and a witness stated that although the warning bells were operating the warning lights were not functioning.  The Union Pacific work crew and witnesses at a local polling place on Main Street say both the lights and warning bells were in operation at the time of the accident.

The investigation is continuing with both the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and Union Pacific Railroad Investigators working the accident.
