Resident Arrested For Arson, Battery After Setting Residence On Fire

A Clarksville resident was arrested on March 2 after a domestic related incident at a relatives residence escalated into arson and battery. Michael Hylton, age 49 was arrested inside the residence after a scuffle with deputies. The Sheriff's Office received a call from a female resident on CR 3553 stating that her brother had physically assaulted her and threw her from her residence. Upon arrival of deputies the suspect would not open the door to the residence and was beligerent and agitated. As deputies gathered on the front porch, they smelled smoke coming from the residence. Deputies discovered the residence had been set on fire from inside. They were unable to make entry through the door because it had been barricaded from the inside. Deputies then broke a window and entered the residence which was filling up with smoke. Hylton then ran from the residence and upon noticing other deputies on the porch ran back into the residence. Deputies located him hiding behind a door and an altercation began as they tried to remove him from the residence. Hylton resisted efforts to remove him and began kicking the rear door shut and throwing punches as the residence was filling with smoke and fire. Deputies managed to restrain him and remove him from the residence. Hylton is charged with Arson, Domestic Battery 3rd Degree, Resisting Arrest and 2 counts of Battery 2nd Degree for assaulting two deputies. RFD 1 and 2 responded to the residence. The residence was a total loss. Hylton was taken before Circuit Judge Dennis Sutterfield on March 3 where his bond was set at $50,000.00 cash only. Hylton is due to appear in Johnson County Circuit Court on March 5.
