Search Warrant Executed At Puppy Mill near Lamar

Deputies with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and representatives with the Humane Society of the United States and the Needy Paws Animal Shelter served a search warrant at a "puppy mill" located at a residence on County Road 2621 just outside the Lamar city limits on Tuesday, October 6. Information was developed over the past several weeks about the dogs living in squalid conditions on the property. A total of 96 dogs, 6 cats and 2 guinea pigs were removed from the property. Over 80 dogs were living in cages inside a 16 x 50 mobile home, along with the owner. The animals were removed to a temporary shelter in Clarksville where they received veterinarian care and check-ups. One dog was so matted it had to be cut from it's cage. Many of the dogs were emaciated, covered in feces and urine, suffered from skin and eye infections and had not been let out of their cages for some time. Once the information from the Humane Society is turned over to the Sheriff's Office, plans are in place to pursue criminal charges against the owner/occupants of the property.
